Dr Martens, Oxford Street
Structural & Refurbishment
MJC were delighted to win the competitive tender for extensive construction and refurbishment work at Dr Martens flagship store in Oxford Street.
Dr Martens is an iconic British brand of footwear that is recognisable across the world. Their strategy for growth is to engage directly with consumers and provide the best environment to showcase the brand and products.
It wasn’t ideal therefore when their Oxford Street flagship store, opened just 6 years ago, developed structural issues requiring urgent repairs.
Extensive work was required to expose and remove the existing concrete deck over the basement and the associated steelwork running underneath the Oxford Street pavements. The works included reinstatement of the steelwork, concrete deck and pavement over.
MJC Construction won the £250k contract, working with CS2 Surveyors and Furness Partnership structural engineers. The lengthy process of gaining necessary access and work permits started two months before work could begin on-site. Another challenge was the need to keep this iconic store open throughout the works.
In the end the temporary hoardings with eye catching artwork proved to be an asset in attracting footfall!
